The console world is setting up for the showdown. Sony’s new media is going to be using Blu-ray technology

Blu-ray disc TDK

In the typical MS fashion of bug fix here, promiss more later, and damn we forgot that. MS is now saying they will sell a add on unit to replace the Xbox360′s DVD drive with a HD DVD drive at a later date.

Wireless hijacking under scrutiny

Wireless hijacking under scrutiny

“Gaining unauthorised access to someone else’s network is an offence and people have to take responsibility for their actions. Some people might argue that taking a joy-ride in someone else’s car is not an offence either”.

I am willing to bet that if you left the door open and the keys in the car and broadcasted out to the world it was sitting there, they might just say it was your own damn fault.

People with criminal intentions have, in the past, attempted to use the openness of their own wireless networks to cover their tracks online.

“There have been incidences where paedophiles deliberately leave their wireless networks open so that, if caught, they can say that is wasn’t them that used the network for illegal purposes,” said NetSurity’s Mr Cracknell.

Such a defence would hold little water as the person installing the network, be they a home user or a business, has ultimate responsibility for any criminal activity that takes place on that network, whether it be launching a hack attack or downloading illegal pornography.

So they can charge everyone in this because the person that used it for wrong was trespassing and the other person was guilty because they didnt keep them out?

Warez Scene and the FBI

Alright first off this story comes from slashdot.org, but I will just post to the bbc link here.

I dont see how the FBI and others think up this stuff “US police say $100m worth of illegal material was removed from the net?”. In the same article did you not just say “It said that once a film or game is copied, the pirated material is sent to servers throughout the world in minutes and then makes its way to file-sharing networks.” SO.. You have slowed down the flow for a few minutes?

They had some pretty funny posts on slahsdot that go over what a better use of the FBI’s time could be.

What a night

Just spent hours updating a whack of debian boxes one of which has not been updated for a very very long while. So much still to do on it, but since some was installed by source I think I will wait and convert it over to using debian packages so I dont have to track down source updates all the time and do all that by hand. Should not be a huge deal as the config files should work nice once I put them in a standard location. My god it is late and I have lost all track of time in this mass upgrade… I just hope tomorrow I dont get a ton of calls about things not working. :) I still find it best to not tell them you are doing upgrades because if they know they will say something is slower or not working right when it is working just the same as before. The other plus is you can play the old “I dont know what happened, let me take a look at this”. In truth though if they do call because there have been so many updates today I wont really know what it is… Logs are your friend.

Gnome just keeps getting better.

Went back to a nice install of Debian Sid on my desktop here at home. My god Gnome just keeps getting better and better. I like how when you look at the desktop not much seems to change, but go into the menu and they have so much more stuff. Not like KDE where it is all just more crap all over the place, but actual good stuff. They also cleaned up a few of the icon sets I think because they are looking a little more polished to me. Gnome 2.10.2 is a very nice thing!
