Helping a friend install Wordpress

I was helping a friend install Wordpress on a hosting account they bought. I always forget how much of a pain it is to work on a box you can’t just shell into. Sure they give you some nice things like phpmyadmin and a web based ftp client, but everything is just so confusing for what seems like no reason. Ended up getting it all installed and setup in the end, after getting them to switch to linux hosting. It seems that godaddy does not have php on the windows hosting… Or so they told us.. Anyway the page worked for the php on the windows hosting but could not contact the Mysql server. I even made a dummy php script to check the connection and it worked saying it could not contact the mysql server. Once we moved over to the linux hosting things went a little better but there was a issue on our end with a certain transparent proxy that has been a thorn in my side a few times now.

I hear that… Using commercial hosting accounts does have it’s advantages, but is quite often a total pain. I’ve always failed to see how learning how to use some fancy-pants in-browser admin console is easier than just using standard tools like a terminal. I suppose the more options to get the job done, the better, though…

My guess is they use this more for security. They buy the package of tools and then dont have to work hard locking down terminal logins.
