Explosion in the Tank

Posted in Aquarium on July 30th, 2006 by hurt – 1 Comment

I ended up creating a big mess in the fish tank Friday night. There was a issue with the CO2 system leaking mix into the tank. I noticed it right away and pull it out to clean the tube out and then used the python to suck up the little that had leaked into the water. After cleaning out the cap and tube I figured it would be ok and hooked it back up. That was a mistake…. After 15 to 20 min I came back to check on the tank and it was all white clouds. I Quickly took out the CO2 system again and did a 75% water change. The huge water change helped and the water just had a haze to it now, so I left it to filter over night. The tank looks back to normal now but I am still waiting to see if any bad effects come up from this.

SSH Hangs after Password Prompt

I’ll tell you, sometimes you should never change a working thing. ;)

In my effort to update some systems to latest 2.6 and 2.4 kernels I came across a issue where ssh would prompt me for my password and then do nothing at all, just sit and hang in my terminal. The fix for this was pretty easy and actually came to me pretty quick (not sure why, most things have been taking me a while). Anyhow the problem was that I didnt add unixpty support to the kernel on this specific box. So a quick add then recompile and all was well again.

Issues with Nvidia Linux Driver

Upgrading to the latest kernel and latest Nvidia Driver release (kernel 2.6.17.6 / NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run) created some issues. I ended up getting the error.

(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0 )

The way I ended up getting around this issue was to tell the Nvidia Driver where the modules for xorg where. This was done with the following command;

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/

AquaClear BioMax Filter

Posted in Aquarium on July 22nd, 2006 by hurt – Be the first to comment

I ended up picking up some more food for the this yesterday and decided I should try something other than the two foam filters that I have in the tank right now. Because I have a real low fish count for the size of the tank and the plants are getting more heavy Carbon and along those lines would actually do me more harm that good. So I went with a AquaClear BioMax, and will just rise it out with tank water every time I clean the filter. This will let some good “bacterial colonies” to grow in it and help out in the tank.

BioMax Filter AquaClear
BioMAX rings increase a filter’s capacity to create optimal biological water conditions for freshwater and marine aquarium inhabitants. BioMAX are porous ceramic rings that provide the largest surface area and maximum number of pores perfectly sized to accomodate bacterial colonies. They allow these colonies to establish, multiply and thrive, creating the ideal conditions for bacteria necessary to maintain biological balance. One ring has 10 times the biological power of a standard cartridge insert. For best results, BioMAX rings should be placed at the end of the filtration cycle. BioMAX – the biological power pack! 11.5 oz.

I will do a update if I remeber in a few months and see if I think it has helped out at all.

Hangin Out with Shaggy

I ended up going out to my moms to get some stuff and stopped in to see what Shaggy was up to. We went for a little walk, then went back to his place and did some computer talk. It was good seeing him (it has been a very long while). He even had a xmas gift for me what was pretty nice of him. It is a collectors Misfits glass clock, that I think will either go above the fish tank or over the kitchen table. He also showed me his system that just got a nice new install of Gentoo. The plan is to maybe hang out this weekend for a coffee or some drinks.
