Tank Changes

I decided that most of the plants in my tank where not really getting the growth I wanted from them and that a change must be made. After looking into the options of lighting and other such things I decided to go for a new bulb and some fertilizer.

The fertilizer I have had before but don’t really know if it helped at all (Mind you I think I was getting better growth at the time). I just picked up a small bottle of Plant GRO Iron Enriched Aquatic Plant Fertilizer.

As for lights I was using a Hagen AquaGlo that was putting out a spectrum of the following.

Aqua Glo

I decided to switch it to a Hagen FloraGlo that will putting out the following.

Flora Glo

Now I don’t really understand this anymore than the Flora Glo seems to be much brighter and cover a higher range in the plant area and not so much in the color of fish. All the reviews and forum posts I have read say that people don’t like the washed out color the light puts off compared to the Aqua Glo, but none say if it actually works any better for plants.

I installed the light in the tank and it does seem brighter, but might just be my mind playing tricks on me. :) The fish don’t seem as vibrant as they where before, but hardly much loss since they are all black phantom tetras (not much color to them to begin with). I will have to wait a month or so and see how it works out. If it doesn’t seem to help I might look into getting a new hood that will take both tubes.

The iron should help quite a bit. It’s one of the most important ferts to use in a planted aquarium I think.

As for the bulb it might look alot brighter because it’s new. Bulbs always lose some of there output (10% or more IIRC) after a few months. The full spectrum should help a little for plant growth but more bulbs will probably make a much bigger difference (in both plant and algae growth :) )

More lights would be nice, but for the budget right now this is still the only option. It is not so much the lights but the fact of a new hood that is putting this off. Its hard to say right now but even after a week the plants look more green and healthy than they where before… Now I just wait for some growth.
