Xfce4 Desktop Install

For a very long time now I have been using Gnome for my desktop at work and home. Before that it was all blackbox, fluxbox, and openbox desktops. The move to gnome was more a need to just get work done and gnome made it quicker to do some stuff than fluxbox would. I was also finding myself using a fair number of gtk apps (gedit, gaim, etc). Looking back in my posts I started to use gnome full time around March 12th, 2005 and stuck with it from then on with only minor switches back to a blackbox type window manager.

Well the other day I decided to break out of the gnome desktop and use something close but not.. I tested out xfce4 to see what I thought of the latest version they had to offer. Trying it before and not being a fan I was not expecting much.. Well Xfce4 version 4.3.99.1 almost has me sold. It is clean and stays out of my way in a gnome like fashion, but at the same time seems more pulled together than gnome. Sure it has less “stuff” on a install, but you can add pretty much anything you need and even use a gnome applet dock for the pannel. It feels very much like the perfect mix of minimal and a full blow desktop enviroment (gnome).

Nice, man! You’ll have to show me a thing or two in XFCE sometime, since I’ve kind of been wanting to check it out, myself!
