Dell and Linux

Posted in Computers on April 30th, 2007 by hurt – 3 Comments

As much of a Big Blue (aka Lenovo) lover that I am, I am following what Dell might end up doing. They are moving into a position that they will sell Dell’s with Linux.

Drivers support would be the first issue on the list and if they can pull this off and actually cover older dell hardware too I might be sold. They do offer some cheaper options, but most of the Dells I have seen seem.. Well yah cheap. I am sure they have some higher end stuff that actually is pretty nice, but for support and dependability I am still sticking with my thinkpads. It never hurts to have more people in the market of Linux support and I would not count out ever getting a Dell if the price was right, the laptop didn’t seem flimsy, and had good Linux support.

The big thing is not so much they have to support it, but they have to start picking hardware that is supported by the community. Also if they partner with RedHat or something and sell the OS with it for $80′s a year I would consider this a step in the right direction but would not be sold on the idea.

Auto Repairs On Hold.

I spent most of the afternoon today out shopping around for some repairs on the old mustang. It needs some work to the exhaust system, and I was thinking it was going to turn into a lot more money than it will actually cost. It sounded like the hole was near the front of the car.. Which to anyone means BIG Cash. Turns out that the Hold is actually after the catalytic converters. That was the good news.. The bad news was that it was right after them on the straight pipe that goes to the muffler. Also the muffler is showing signs of starting to leak some. There is actually no hole yet but it is close to needing to be replaced and the noise is coming from where a flange has rusted off. They could have just tacked the flange back on for $80, but I would need to get it all done soon in any case. Because from the flange to the tailpipe is all one piece that means everything from the cat’s back needs to be done. I ended up getting two quotes for the work and one was $500, while the other was $400. The place that is $400 is also open on Saturdays which means I don’t have to worry about work and stuff while it is in. None of the places I went had parts or could get them for my make and model till Thursday.

I am pretty glad that it is not a huge amount of work and even though I don’t like to spend $400 on repairs I can’t complain.. Up to now on a 9 year old car I have replaced front brake disc’s, brake pads all the way around, and one tie rod.

After all my car shopping I came home weeded and turned over the next door neighbors and my own front garden. I find it quicker to just turn it all over than to actually weed the whole thing. :)

While browsing around on wikipedia I ended up on the Nevermind page. I guess Nirvana tried to use underwater birth shots, but the people that owned them wanted over $7000 US for them per year. Eventually they paid Spencer Elden’s parents $200 total for the shot of him. The deal was Kurt and Courtney where suppose to have dinner with him when he was older (guessing this didn’t happen as he is only 15 or something now.

Anyhow just thought it would be odd to be able to say you where on the cover of nevermind, but yet have the most crazy bathtub picture in the world mass produced.

Spencer Elden Nirvana Nevermind

I actually found the interview this image is from on youtube (they don’t need a link). The kid actually says something to the effect of “ya I’m Nirvana”. Take your crooked independent hat and go home! Nevermind was not even the greatest Nirvana album. In his defense if I was on the cover of nevermind it would be the highlight of my life.. I guess it would play strange things on your mind, but the kid has to get grounded at some point..

I sense headlines in the future where this person dies and they quote this.. “He was on the cover of nevermind”. Let him have his fun, cause even at the end it is going to be noted that he was on the cover. ;)

Tango Down

Today could have been a horrible day, and to be honest I really thought it was going to be horrible when I woke up. There was just some stuff today at work that I was not expecting to go right. Oddly it went better than it ever has done (for this issue I am talking about and not saying what it is). :)

Anyhow after the other stuff was done I ended up playing around with a few simple IDS’s (Intrusion Detection Systems) and seem to like the opensource version of tripwire for my needs. It was pretty easy to install and configure and I didn’t really need to look up anything to get it going. I still have some work to get to know it better, but so far it seems pretty straight forward.

After my day of stuff and IDS playing I came home and used gparted to fix a dead 2gig SD card that lost its mind a while back and went read only regardless of the lock switch. I could format it and write to it but then it would be read only again. I ended up giving up on it and figured it was a lost cause after a few times of this months back. Today I tried it again and when I tried to load it up with fdisk it prompted saying that the partition was larger than the cylinder size and could not be edited. A quick google turned up a forum where someone with a complete different issue suggest the user try gparted. I gave it a shot and it seems to be saved. Gparted just uses the tools that I was using anyway to fix this issue, but it seems to know something that I don’t about the little memory waffer in the SD Card.

PSP And Late Nights

I ended up scoring a PSP the other day and have been playing it for the past two nights non stop. I have been pretty impressed with it and the load times have not been killing me. Before I got it any one I went up to in a store to test a demo would take to long to load and I would walk away. I don’t know if it is just the games they had in it at the times or if I was just in a time warp and moving in fast forward (highly possible as I hate most stores). In any case I picked up Socom Fire Team Bravo 2 for it and am pretty happy.

Check back if I even stop playing and actually write up a few comments on the game. :)

PSP Mmm.. Sexy
