Portability is releated to batteries

DS Fanboy had a little post called DS Daily: The move to portability that made me think about my gaming habits. There point was really just the market growth of the hand held gaming world of the past few years. Mostly due to the PSP and DS. It is true that hand held gaming has really taken off in the past few years and looking back I never really was to much of a hand held gamer in the past. My first hand held was a original Gameboy. I ended up getting a Super Gameboy to play Zelda Links awaking and never really looked back on the Gameboy. Next I got the big bad Sega Game Gear.. I actually had a much larger library of games for this that the Gameboy but battery life was even more of a issue and I was chained to the AC Adapter to play anything. Then I moved onto the Gameboy Advance and really started to play portable gaming. The battery life was much better than anything before it. Finally I moved onto the DS and have since started playing the hand held more than any other console. I really think that the market was just sick of having to feed batteries into the devices and with the Li-ion batteries going into the device’s and super improved battery life it just started to look like a much more pleasant option.

The following will scare anyone that attempted to play this with out a AC Adapter back in 1991
Sega Game Gear

How true… In fact, I think the Lithium Ion battery has probably propelled a ton of different portable markets… would the ipod be as popular if you had to fill it with 4 or even 6 AA’s?

Also, I totally remember frequently playing Columns on my game gear curled up next to the wall outlet when i was a kid :). Using batteries was a total pain in the butt on that thing!

    Do you still have yours?

We should find some 2 player games and bust out the gamegears. :)

Oh man, that would rule, hardcore! Do you have a 2-player cable? If so, I’ll bring my ‘gear over next time I come out to chill at your place and we’ll rock old school handheld scene :)

Damn good point about the cable. And no I don’t have one.
