Ferguson and the Mollies

Ferguson and the Mollies

I went into the local pet store today and picked up 4 black mollies. I only really had planned to get two since the small tank on my computer desk had lost of forms of fish life. I am pretty sure it was due to stress from a certain cat tormenting them all the time. The tank had been with out fish and just a Java fern for about two weeks and was starting to get some algae growth in it. The mollies are already eating up a fair amount of the alage that had built up, but as you can see someone is already interested in tormenting my poor little friends. Hopefully the mollies stand up to him better than the little neon tetras did… As I had said I ended up getting 4 of them and put the other two in the larger tank that is in the dinning room. There is a little more algae in that tank that I would like also, but it is kept pretty much under control with the Amano Shrimp and Otto Cat’s. I think combined the Shrimp and Otto Cat’s might actually out number the fish I have in that tank.

Upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04

Upgraded my laptop to the latest version of Ubuntu (9.04). Everything seems to be running pretty nice and stable for me. Not any huge changes in my day to day usage of apps, but the new gnome does seem a little quicker.

Laundry day procrastination

Trying to get up the energy to do my laundry today is turning out to be a major task. It is not to bad when I have just one load to do, but today it is going to be about 3 loads. To help build up the needed “force” to complete this task I have been reading The Cat User’s Manual. I still have to finish reading the whole thing, but so far it has been pretty informative for me.

In aquarium news: I ended up spending about $14.00 on a few bunches of dwarf chain sword to add to the 30gal tank. I have tried it in there on several occasions and although it never all dies, most of it does not live and what does never really grows. I am hoping this will change and have been doing water changes and adding plant grow more often. The small bits had before this purchase started to show some small improvement, so I figured I would give it all a go. It would be really nice to get a good ground cover growing in the tank.. I will not hold my breath as my more aquarium knowledge friend is also having issue getting ground cover.

Other than that my life has been eaten away by Puzzle Quest for the DS.. Expect to see a post or review of this game down the road when I have some more time.

Today while I was cleaning out the 30 gal tank I noticed two small little black mollies. Seems that my two Mollies have been busy getting it on and two of the babies seemed to survive despite everyone else wanting to eat them. RIght now they are pretty small and hard to notice unless you are looking for them, but I hope they make it and grow bigger.

BiOrb Cleaning and Mods

Baby BiOrb

Several months back I finally broke down and got a BiOrb for my desk. I had been wanting one since I first saw them online a few years back. For those that have no idea what I am talking about, it is aquarium made by Reef One. It is actually pretty high construction and I have been happy with it. It pimps out any computer desk in style, and makes for a nicer look that a standard tank on the desk. The whole pitch that they sell you on is its super low maintenance. All they direct you to do is a small water change every week or two and replace the filter every 3 months. There claim is actually true and it is extremely low maintenance to keep. With all things though there is always something you would like to change about it. Today I had to get another filter for the tank and decided to opt out and just clean the filter that came with it under the tap. I can’t imagine this will be bad as it looks just the same as any other foam tank filter (mind you it is a circle). Because I was in the pet store though I decided to pick up some small things for it. The first thing I picked up was a Check Valve for the air pump. I keep the orb on my desk above my computer so it kinda worried me that there was a tube with the potential of splashing water all over the computer.

The check valve was a pretty easy install and just creates a one way flow. Air can go out but water can’t come back. This makes me feel some what better about the whole setup and I really think it should just be included with any air pump.

The last thing I got was an acrylic scrubber by Top Fin. I was kinda worried about what to use on the orb and didn’t want to scratch it all up. Reef One sells what look like wet naps to clean it, but the price was a little to high for my liking. The Top Fin one cleaned up the side in no time and didn’t make any marks on the tank at all.
