Spent some time tonight playing around with the new WordPress. I changed up the theme (Not overly happy with it yet), redid the ads and am using some ad plug-ins to server them up randomly. Added side content using widgets so next time I change themes I don’t need to edit the theme files by hand.

I am really impressed with how far WordPress has come over the years. Really you can do everything you want from the admin panel and never have to touch the site files or themes. Updating via the web is not so painless you have no excuse not to be up to date with the current version. I am still using a plug-in to filter out spam comments, but might try disabling it and see if WordPress has anything under the hood by default to deal with spam.

Over the past while I have become a widget and plug-in whore. Everything I think of doing seems to have a plug-in. Installing plug-ins from the admin panel allows you to install, play with, and delete in minutes. I was a little worried about using a plug-in to manage google ads, since it would be easy for someone to make it so they got all the clicks (I think I am safe with my 2 clicks a month).

In searching for the above WordPress logo image I used google images. I really dislike the new google images search page and the loading of the image in the foreground of a AJAX window. I wish you could go back to the old image pages with the top frame.

Well the one I was using a long time ago stopped working and I never really had the time to look into why. Today I just looked for a new plugin todo the same task and found Last.fm For WordPress, that seems to be rocking the tracks to my side menu.

Had the people come to clean and check the furnace/ac unit, pool people came to open the pool, my buddy Jay stopped in with his girlfriend and daughter, Buddy Dave came over last night, and Erika baby sat Julia (sp?).

Only downside to it all was the diving board is missing a nut for one of the bolts to hold it to the base. Not a huge deal since its a standard bolt and is prob $0.50 at Homedepo. Be more of a pain trying to get it on myself that getting the actual part. Pool is full of water now and still a little cloudy, so I will have to head in to town at some point today to get some Chems for it.

In other news I decided to stop using flickr and have started to use Picasa again. You can check out my picasa images via this link. Oh and I added a icon on the side bar of the page to my twitter account

It had been active and running since Oct 30 2001. The site was still getting some traffic but it was not getting any content updates for a very long time. It was starting to turn into a task of just updating wordpress every month or two with not content change on the site. I plan to still keep the domain active but not have a site for it.

Thanks goes to team ninja for keeping the server up and running the whole time. :)

WordPress has a pretty decent black list system you can use and I always tend to keep comment posting to only if pre approved.

So anyone else out there using anything neat to stop the comment spam of there blog?

You might also notice the fancy new theme I installed. Its called Carrington. I pretty much just used the stock theme and changed some font colors in the css, added some google ads, and presto. Its pretty different than the hack on the old hacked up Kubrick theme I had been using for years now. Hopefully the new theme will get me back into working on the site as it was growing pretty stale around here the past year or so.

In the video game news I have given Rockband2 a break and picked up a copy of the new Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 for PS3. I have not really been playing any RTS games since StarCraft, so it seems pretty fast to me right now. In the campaign mode I seem to be doing ok, but playing against the AI in a one on one game… yah, I don’t seem to last very long and run out of funds and just have to watch my base be bombed and blown to crap.

Since getting the Treo 755p and the always constant need to need something to kill some time while waiting for things, I decided to go back to using google reader. It has actually been working very well on the Treo, and once you get use to the quick keys you can navigate around your news feeds pretty quick.

Since I have made the move to the new rss client I figured I should use some of the bonuses it could offer. I installed a nice little wordpress plugin that will take my shared Items from google reader and post them on the site once a week. Now every monday you will be able to see all the links that I have thought where interesting from the week before. :)

I have also added a google reader shared items box on the side menu of the site. It will be the same links that get posted every Monday, but you can see them in real time and only the last 5 items I have shared.
